Microscopes

Question

What are your best-selling GCSE specification microscopes? Also, which are your best budget, middle and luxury models?

Answer

Choosing a microscope can be subjective as there is a degree of personal preference with regards to certain features eg. separate or coaxial focusing and plain or mechanical stages. Having stated this, I will answer your question regarding our best-selling models. At GCSE level there is no requirement to use a magnification greater than 400x. Our best-selling microscope overall would fall into this category. The Motic SFC100F LED (product code MIC-120-150) has been the choice of very many schools - if you refer to our catalogue you will see the full specification.

Another popular model is the Motic F11-10 (MIC-220-100)   This microscope is chunkier than the SFC100F LED and has a slightly better optical quality.  The major difference between this model and the SFC100F LED is that the F11-10 is mains powered whereas the SFC100F LED has an integral rechargeable battery so can be used when not plugged into the mains.  The F11-10 has a close relative in the F11-15 which would a good choice if you ever thought you may need a greater magnification as it has a more powerful condenser and with the addition of a 100x objective is capable of magnifications up to 1000x.
For a luxury model you should consider either the 1801 (MIC-280-150) or the 1802 (MIC-280-100). The 1801 and 1802 have better optics that either the F11-10 or F11-15 and a more modern, sleek body.  The 1802 also has a mechanical stage, both have re-chargeable batteries.  Roughly speaking the 1801 is an upgraded F11-10 and the 1802 an upgraded F11-15.
