Question

On the first few  uses, the mantle material turned brown and there was a burning smell - is this normal?

 

Answer

Yes, often this  will happen for the first 4 or 5 times it is used, until the mess material stabilises. It is probably better to use the mantles in a fume cupboard for the first few uses.
