My Propanal is decolourizing Bromine water - is it contaminated?
Answer
Propanal is an aldehyde which can decolourise Bromine water. Although aldehydes theoretically don't decolourise bromine water, they can do – Ethanal is another aldehyde which can also do this. It seems that Bromine water oxidises aldehydes to carboxylic acids and is decolourised in the process.
